Chicken-like Willow Ptarmigan are common on the Arctic tundra near Churchill. Completely white in winter, the females become fully brown with dark barring during the summer breeding season. This springtime male retains some winter white in the body with its distinct red eye combs contrasting with the summer brown barring on his head, neck and back.
